You may be wondering what am I talking about. This one thing if you do every morning that will have a profound effect on your life is called Oil Pulling. It is also called Gandusha.

What is Oil Pulling?

It is an ancient ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes. Ayurveda, the 3000 year old Indian system of medicine says oil pulling helps against bad breath, gingivitis and plaque. It is done to promote oral hygiene and to detoxify the body.

How does Oil Pulling work?

Most organisms, bacteria, and toxins in the mouth are single cell organisms. These cells are covered with a fatty membrane. When you put oil in your mouth and swish it around during oil pulling, the single cell organisms adhere to this oil (which is a type of fat). This oil then turns whitish in coolor which means it has collected toxins, and all the bad micro-organisms are stuck in it. How to do Oil Pulling?

 So I’m going to first describe to you how I did oil pulling. Every morning when I woke up I first gargled and cleaned my mouth with water. Then instead of brushing my teeth right away, I put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth and continuously swished it around.

This swishing coats all the teeth, gums, tongue, and the inside of the mouth with oil completely. You do this for 10 to 20 minutes and be very careful not to swallow the oil because it is taking out all the germs and bacteria from your mouth. After about 10-20 minutes of swishing you spit this liquid out and you will see that it has become whitish in color. That is natural as the oil is now mixed with your saliva and it is taking out bacteria and germs and toxins from your mouth. Do not spit it in your sink because the oil could clog the drain. I spit in the trash can (lined with plastic bag) because then it can get thrown out with the trash.

So that is oil pulling. You then wash your mouth and gargle with plain water. Then go ahead and brush your teeth and go about your morning routine. While I am swishing the oil in my mouth for the 10 to 20 minutes, I usually start the coffee, get the breakfast ready, start packing everyone’s lunch boxes etc so no time is wasted in the morning.

I like to use organic cold pressed coconut oil, but you can use any oil you use for cooking like olive oil, avocado oil, sesame oil, mustard oil, or even canola oil.

How often should you do oil pulling?

Oil pulling should be done once a day right after you wake up.

Do you brush your teeth before or after oil pulling?

The best time to do oil pulling is as soon as you wake up, after cleaning your mouth with plain water ie doing plain water gargles. Then do oil pulling for 10 to 20 minutes. And then after spitting the whitish oil in a trash can, you can clean your mouth again with water gargles.  Then brush your teeth.

How long should you oil pull?

Oil pulling should be done for 10 to 20 minutes. If some days you are in a rush, you may do it for 10 minutes. On days that you have extra time, you may do it for 20 minutes.
