Doing This One Thing Every Morning Will Change Your Life

You may be wondering what am I talking about. This one thing if you do every morning that will have a profound effect on your life is called Oil Pulling. It is also called Gandusha.

What is Oil Pulling?

It is an ancient ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes. Ayurveda, the 3000 year old Indian system of medicine says oil pulling helps against bad breath, gingivitis and plaque. It is done to promote oral hygiene and to detoxify the body.

How does Oil Pulling work?

Most organisms, bacteria, and toxins in the mouth are single cell organisms. These cells are covered with a fatty membrane. When you put oil in your mouth and swish it around during oil pulling, the single cell organisms adhere to this oil (which is a type of fat). This oil then turns whitish in coolor which means it has collected toxins, and all the bad micro-organisms are stuck in it. That is why you make sure you do not swallow this liquid as we want to rid our body of all the toxins, not ingest it.

How to do Oil Pulling?

So I’m going to first describe to you how I did oil pulling. Every morning when I woke up I first gargled and cleaned my mouth with water. Then instead of brushing my teeth right away, I put 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in my mouth and continuously swished it around.

This swishing coats all the teeth, gums, tongue, and the inside of the mouth with oil completely. You do this for 10 to 20 minutes and be very careful not to swallow the oil because it is taking out all the germs and bacteria from your mouth. After about 10-20 minutes of swishing you spit this liquid out and you will see that it has become whitish in color. That is natural as the oil is now mixed with your saliva and it is taking out bacteria and germs and toxins from your mouth. Do not spit it in your sink because the oil could clog the drain. I spit in the trash can (lined with plastic bag) because then it can get thrown out with the trash.

So that is oil pulling. You then wash your mouth and gargle with plain water. Then go ahead and brush your teeth and go about your morning routine. While I am swishing the oil in my mouth for the 10 to 20 minutes, I usually start the coffee, get the breakfast ready, start packing everyone’s lunch boxes etc so no time is wasted in the morning.

Benefits of Oil Pulling

1.  Oil Pulling Helps Reduce Bad Breath

There are many causes of bad breath or halitosis. Some people may have bad breath due to gum disease, or some infection in the mouth, or also a coating on the tongue which is full of bacteria. Oil pulling is effective in reducing bad breath from any cause.

2.  Oil Pulling Helps Prevent Cavities

Too much sugar can cause bacteria buildup in the mouth which can cause tooth decay. This in turn can lead to holes in the teeth which are called cavities. Some studies have found that oil pulling can reduce the bacteria in the mouth, and thus stop tooth decay.

Gingivitis is a gum disease in which the gums bleed, and become swollen and darker red in color. Oil pulling promotes gum health and helps reduce gingivitis. It strengthens the teeth and gums.

My experience with oil pulling

I have heard a lot about oil pulling over the years but had never given it a try. About a month ago, I decided to try this practice for 30 days and then decide if I want to continue it or not based on my results. So my decision as of now is to continue this practice.  There are several reasons for this decision:

  • My mouth actually feels clean after doing oil pulling.
  • My mouth does not feel dry after this 30 day trial.
  • My lips are not dry anymore.
  • My teeth look whiter.
  • My facial skin is softer and more glowing after this 30 day trial.

I keep an open mind about ancient herbal practices. I believe the benefits take time and will show if you do the alternative medicine practices consistently and correctly.
